The 50th Anniversary Committee’s second event, which became known as “50th Anniversary Family Fun Day”, took place on a sun drenched Saturday, June 26, 2010. The event began at 9:30 AM with a 1.8 mile non-competitive run/walk from the Village Hall to the Village’s Willow Pond Park. Breakfast snacks and drinks were served at the park to all participants. All participants who ran in the “Fun Run” were given a 50th Anniversary Family Fun Day t-shirt. The “Fun Run” went off without any issues and the participants had a good time.
The main portion of the event consisted of a “Family Cookout” at Willow Pond Park. This event was scheduled to take place from 11 AM and continue until roughly 3 PM. The 50th Anniversary Committee provided picnic goers with food and refreshments throughout the event. The Parks & Recreation Department volunteered to oversee much of the activities planned for the day including a fishing contest for the children as well as bean bag toss games and a moonwalk. The fishing contest in particular was a big hit among the children and their families. The Willowbrook Chess Club was also on hand to supervise and teach youngsters the game of chess. Residents enjoyed various Willowbrook themed giveaways such as the 50th Anniversary commemorative book and “Willowbrook – My Home Town” license plate frames.
The concluding activity for the event was the burial of a Willowbrook time capsule. During the months preceding the event, 50th Anniversary Committee had advertised to residents and businesses alike for items which are representative of the Village of Willowbrook’s heritage. After collecting a variety of items, including a multitude of photographs, coins, newspaper clippings, Village memorabilia from throughout the past 5 decades, the Village’s Public Works Department sealed the capsule and buried it in Willow Pond Park. A 3760 pound granite boulder was inscribed with the Village’s logo and the phrase, “50th Anniversary Time Capsule; Placed Here June 26th, 2010; To Be Opened June 26th, 2035.”
