The Village’s Parks & Recreation Department arranged a Veteran’s Memorial dedication ceremony that occurred on November 24, 2013. The ceremony served to dedicate new park amenities which were installed at Willow Pond Park honoring military veterans. The concept for the dedication originated with Eagle Scout candidate Josh Brunzell, and was spearheaded by long-term Park Commissioner Douglas Stetina with assistance from Parks & Recreation Superintendent Kristin Violante. Doug Stetina is a military veteran himself, serving as a US Army computer specialist overseas from 1965 to 1971.
The veteran’s memorial at Willow Pond includes a sitting bench (donated by the Stetina family), a flagpole, flags, and solar lights (donated by the American Legion Post #250), and paving bricks (donated by the Boy Scouts). The dedication was video documented by John Lally owner of Sunrise Advertising Company in Willowbrook. The video is very professionally done, and can be viewed by clicking on the link below.
This was a very successful event and aside from providing an important memorial to our brave military veterans, it also serves as an example of what can be accomplished when individuals dedicate their efforts to their community. Thanks to all involved in this project, including Mayor Frank Trilla, Park Commissioner Stetina, and Superintendent Violante.
