By action of the Village Board at its meeting on November 22, a Special Recreation Tax levy was again approved, funding a variety of items that will assist persons with disabilities. The levy for 2010 shall total $68,118. The tax impact to a Willowbrook homeowner with an assessed valuation of $300,000 will be approximately $13.00, an amount similar to the previous year.
Since first levying the tax in 2006, the Village has used the Special Recreation Tax to:
• Fund the community’s membership in the Gateway Special Recreation Association
• Complete an accessibility study for each of its eight playgrounds
• Begin a program in improving playground accessibility
• Begin a program in improving park facility accessibility, including path and drinking fountain upgrades
• Construct one of the area’s few fully handicapped accessible fishing piers (Willow Pond)
• Provide for making recreation program accommodations for patrons with disabilities
The Village Board’s approval of the Special Recreation Tax levy came following recommendations by the Parks and Recreation Commission, the Village’s Administration/Finance Committee, the Board of Directors of the Gateway Special Recreation Association and Village staff.
